Today, I am pleased to share our second ESG report, which outlines the progress we’ve made in incorporating sustainability into every step of our mission to redefine how the world grows food amidst the uncertainties of a changing climate.

This report is especially significant to me as it marks my first as the Chief Sustainability and Communications Officer of Rivulis. It also represents a milestone in our journey to empower growers everywhere with the tools they need to become sustainable and climate-resilient farmers.

The report highlights the high standards we uphold in our business operations and showcases the evolution of our company. Since our inaugural report in 2022, we’ve merged with the International Irrigation Business of Jain Irrigation, expanding our accountability efforts to include these subsidiaries. We’ve doubled in size, welcomed nearly 750 new colleagues, expanded to more countries, and broadened our solutions offering with best-in-class micro irrigation products, all while staying true to our guiding principles.

Our Vision in Action

Our vision, “Embrace the Planet, Feed the World, and Change the Life of Every Farmer,” is the philosophy that drives our actions and decisions. Through this philosophy, we are committed to making a difference in our operational footprint, the communities we serve, and the employees we work with. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

Footsteps without Footprints

Knowing our vision, it’s no surprise that Rivulis is also committed to integrating sustainability principles into our manufacturing processes, facilities, products, and services. We constantly aim to reduce our carbon footprint while advancing our business objectives without causing significant harm to the planet.

Our efforts to reduce energy consumption and plastic waste include programs for collecting and recycling used drip lines and drip tapes from our customers’ fields, and when challenges arise, we create our own solutions. This year, we will launch a state-of-the-art recycling facility in California, which will have the capacity to recover our products and integrate at least 30% post-consumer and post-industrial waste into our raw materials by 2025.

In line with our commitment to sustainable innovation, we are proud to have recently launched Rivulis T-Tape White, the first drip tape made with at least 50% recycled materials. This product offers the same trusted performance in water application, clogging resistance, strength, and customizable configurations, in a more environmentally friendly option that farmers want.

Under our Renewable Energy initiative, we installed new solar panel systems in Greece and Spain in 2019, reducing our annual carbon emissions by a combined 807 tons of CO2 by producing 743,824 kWh of solar energy.

Last but not least, in our latest initiative—the Rivulis Climate Program—we are developing new business models for farmers to adopt more sustainable practices while accessing the benefits of the voluntary carbon credit economy. The program has already supported ten farmers on 1,250 hectares, with a goal to reach 25 farmers and 3,500 hectares in 2024.

Empowering Employees, Communities, and Growers

To make our vision come to life it’s also important that we create an environment internally that keeps all our employees connected and engaged. This includes integrating all the new colleagues from Jain and fostering a strong company culture that respects the heritage of our diverse workforce, which includes 37 nationalities. This is tremendously important and allows us to be a positive force in all the communities where we operate, engaging with local governments, schools, community groups, and NGOs on social issues, food security, and sustainability.

A key part of our inclusivity and empowerment efforts is the Rivulis Impact Finance initiative, which bridges financial gaps to make micro irrigation accessible to all farmers, regardless of size. This initiative ensures everyone has a stake in the global shift towards eco-friendly practices.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

While we have made significant strides and adhere to the metrics of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, we are still just at the beginning.

The case studies in this report inspire me for the future. From supporting over 4,500 women farmers in India in enabling year-round crop cultivation and boosting incomes through the introduction of drip irrigation systems to integrating subsurface drip irrigation into a mill in Da Mata, Brazil, which doubled production while halving energy usage, to establishing a demo farm in the UAE showcasing techniques to protect food security in challenging conditions, these stories affirm that our work truly matters.

Our journey is one of continuous improvement and relentless dedication. I invite you to read these stories and join us in the next ambitious steps on this journey.

According to Jon Baravir, Climate Director, Rivulis, by demystifying the voluntary carbon market.

Agriculture holds a unique double opportunity to reverse adverse climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and removing carbon from the atmosphere. By adopting more sustainable farming practices, farmers can increase their profitability and significantly contribute to environmental goals. Rivulis is at the forefront of this transformation, providing farmers access to the carbon credit market, simplifying the process, and ensuring tangible benefits.

The Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), valued at $2 billion in 2022, is projected to expand dramatically, potentially reaching $50 billion by 2030 according to Citi, driven by growing “net zero” corporate commitments. This market represents a largely untapped opportunity for farmers. Less than 1% of carbon credits originate from the agricultural sector, underpinning the relevance of the Rivulis Climate team. Farmers entering this market can create a new income stream without compromising their current operations.

“Rivulis makes it easier for farmers to participate in the VCM by handling all administrative and registration processes free of charge, in exchange for a small percentage of the carbon credit revenue. The estimated cost to register a carbon credit project over time is around $150,000, which Rivulis covers entirely,” says Baravir.

Transitioning to sustainable farming practices and obtaining carbon credits is a complex, long-term process that can take over 24 months. Rivulis supports farmers at every step, from advising on best practices to managing the registration process. Rivulis develops its scientific approaches to measure and model the carbon sequestration impact of such changes, especially in soils and trees, per the requirements of the VCM. Recommendations include switching to drip irrigation, reducing tillage, implementing cover crops, using fewer fertilizers, incorporating residues into the soil, and implementing agroforestry practices.

The impact of Rivulis’ initiatives is evident in the rapid growth of their listed projects, covering over 4,000 hectares (doubling where it was just 6 months ago) globally. For example, a collective of row crop farms in Northern Italy that spans 3,000 hectares, and 150 hectares of farms in Israel, growing avocados more sustainably, have joined the program. Another farm in Portugal, that employs a broad set of sustainable farming practices, like using solar energy and enriching the organic matter in the soil, is replacing intensive corn cultivation with a native olive grove.

The Rivulis Climate team is in advanced discussions with other growers globally, highlighting the growing awareness and adoption of carbon credits in agriculture.

“This achievement underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship and demonstrates our ability to advance complex agronomic solutions and climate-resilient models to drive meaningful environmental and economic benefits,” shares Baravir.

The European Union has begun placing conditions on sustainable farming for agricultural subsidies, and there is active discussion about similar measures in the U.S. Rivulis Climate gears farmers in anticipation of any changes that may happen.

Benefits for farmers include:

  • New Income Source: Carbon credits provide additional revenue without disrupting operations.
  • Sustainability: Adopting regenerative agriculture practices leads to healthier soil, increased biodiversity, and reduced chemical use.
  • Recognition: Farmers are acknowledged for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and capturing carbon.
  • Futureproofing: Stay ahead of regulatory and customer demands regarding environmental impact.

“We invite farmers, stakeholders, and the agricultural community to join in shaping the future of agriculture. Participating in the Rivulis Climate program means farmers benefit financially and contribute to global environmental efforts,” continues Baravir.

Two successful trials conducted in Greece aimed at improving potato farming efficiency during spring and winter cultivating periods have demonstrated the effectiveness of Rivulis’ advanced drip irrigation technologies.

This global staple food is humble but a healthy tuber and is one of the most commercially grown crops in the world with approximately 375 million tons produced each year! The trials compared Rivulis’ drip irrigation solutions with the common method of overhead irrigation using sprinklers, which is prevalent in Greece for potato cultivation.

Rivulis focused on testing Rivulis’ system with two different water sources and two distinct types of soil. In the spring trial, river water was used for irrigation in sandy soil, while in the winter trial, a drill was employed for water in clay soil.

Both projects meant deploying the same Rivulis drip irrigation system, designed to accommodate field parameters such as plant and line spacing, and specific potato varieties (‘Vogue’ and ‘Liseta’) meant for the fresh market.

The results of both trials were remarkable in yield and quality. During the spring trial, both systems produced an impressive total yield of 53 tons per hectare, outperforming the area’s average yield of 45 tons per hectare, with the same variety and conditions. However, an in-depth analysis revealed key differences: the Drip system achieved a higher marketable yield and better average potato weight when compared to the Sprinkler system.

Similarly, during the winter trial, the drip system achieved a higher yield compared to the sprinkler system, with respective differences also in marketable yield.

These results highlight the efficiency of Rivulis’ drip irrigation solutions in optimizing water usage, minimizing losses, improving input efficacy, and enhancing marketability across different conditions (season, soil, water source, etc.).

The implementation of drip irrigation not only resulted in higher potato yields but also showcased a remarkable reduction in water consumption. Specifically, the drip system utilized 18% less water during the spring season and 40% less water during the winter season compared to sprinklers.

These trials demonstrate Rivulis’ commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security.

Until recently tapes and thin wall drip lines could only be made with one blend of resins. Through Rivulis’ commitment to investing in recycling technology, the new T-Tape White is manufactured with multi-layer blown film resin construction, meaning that the drip tape can be produced with composite layers that optimize product performance while using recycled material between the inner and outer layers. T-Tape White will be launched at the FIMA event in February 2024 in Spain, and then roll out to other territories.

T-Tape White has three layers of optimized product performance, a premium virgin white exterior which provides initial temperature reduction of the water when in direct sunlight, a middle layer utilizing recycled material for sustainability, and a black interior layer for protection against algae growth inside the tube.

The white outer layer reduces the initial water temperature, which during in-field tests, resulted in a temperature reduction for the first 10 minutes of operation when in direct sunlight. This is relevant for young seedlings transplanted from a stable to a harsher environment when the feeder roots are more sensitive to water temperature. Other benefits include reduced calcium carbonate build-up, meaning less scale build-up in the drip itself, higher visibility in the field, and less elongation during the season.

The navigation of the Knowledge Hub has an intuitive menu and search function that allows you to discover the specific drip irrigation-related issue or technical aspect you require. It includes a range of formulas commonly required, whether it be how much water is required to meet the plant water requirements, pump considerations, irrigation scheduling, and chemical calculations for maintenance, all with both metric and US measurements.

If you are new to drip irrigation, you can use the Drip Guides to understand the key determining factors in designing and deciding on what drip irrigation solution is right for you. For those already using drip irrigation the Knowledge Hub provides detailed information on maintenance like filtration, pressure, flow, flushing, and fertigation.

The Drip Guide is split into 4 modules. The first module introduces drip irrigation and the 6 key considerations for the development of your system. The second module provides an in-depth overview of drip irrigation systems and components, while the third module delivers an introduction to hydraulic design and step-by-step instructions for installation and start-up. Lastly, the fourth module is focussed completely on maintenance to get the best longevity out of your system.

It is the same ultimate trusted T-Tape that is renowned for its reliability in water applications, clogging resistance, strength, and customizable configurations, now offered in a solution that provides both a more environmentally friendly option, also with the benefits of a white outer layer. The core of our business has always been to stay connected to our farmers and their needs. As regulatory pressure mounts for farming operations to become mindful of impacts on the planet, to support our customers and growers Rivulis has developed the new White T-Tape, which is made from at least 50% recycled material, that incorporates the highest quality and top performance as Rivulis T-Tape.

Singapore and Kfar-Saba, Israel – 5 July 2022. Rivulis Pte. Ltd. (“Rivulis”) announced today that it has signed definitive agreements with 5 banks for the financing of its current and future debt for an amount of up to US$250,000,000. The syndication was led by HSBC, with the participation of the State Bank of India (India), Rabobank (Netherlands), Leumi Bank (Israel) and First International Bank of Israel.

The Financing Package will allow Rivulis to re-finance its own debt and also re-finance the debt of the International Irrigation Business (“IIB”) of Jain Irrigation (India), which, according to prior announcements made on the 22nd of June 2022, will merge with Rivulis pending regulatory approvals. Whilst not in place now, Rivulis has the option to approach all the lenders to incorporate sustainability features based on KPIs (to be agreed) in order to track the Company’s ESG performance.

Eran Ezra, Rivulis CFO, explained: “This Financing package, offered by such prestigious banking institutions, underscores our strong forward momentum to become a global irrigation and climate leader, and is testimony to the strong backing received in this. The package will allow for strong organic growth while simultaneously enabling us to execute on our already announced merger with Jain’s IIB. The terms obtained by the banks, including covenant and maturities’ structure, will give us the operational flexibility we need to execute on our strategic plans to make modern irrigation accessible to growers across the globe and will enable management focus on the tasks ahead of us.”
